From The Very Beginning
It seems that everything was okay, everything was as usual. People were born, than studied, worked, married, became parents etc. But in 1339 in northwestern part of Europe different changes started. Some problems in economic and also the population were growing but there were not enough food for everybody. The climate changed. The winters became very cold and summers – dry. That’s why the harvest was really very poor. Soon everybody knew what famine is. People were worried a lot. They did not know what to do. During the seven years the population suffered of the bad weather and food shortage. Many people thought that it is the end, but it was only the beginning. After the famine came the biggest trouble – the plague. People were sick, tired and almost exhausted. They quickly fell ill and the plague quickly spread all around the countries. During the three years thousands and thousands of people were died. Nobody could stop this horror and no medicine could help. People called this disease the Black Death. Because of this tragedy changed not only the demographic indicators but also economic system and church system also. The plague of that period killed more European people than any war. Black Death left an enormous mark in the history of Europe, having left a mark on economy, psychology, culture and even genetic structure of the population.
As the plague started to kill the population, people were in panic. Everybody wanted to live and people left their homes and moved to villages and other parts of the country. People needed the fresh air, that’s why everybody cared about himself, not thinking about his/her relatives. And at that areas were everything was quiet appeared sick people and infected all around. It was like an awful game for survival. People were angry and they found somebody to blame for all this things. And soon Jews became guilty. They were hated and expelled from the cities. Jews had no right to work in a government. And the first ghettos appeared. As the Jews were separated, they were not ill for the first time, but later the plague either appeared on their territory.
Almost everyone was depressed. It was look like the life changed forever. People were not interesting in fashion, music, art. Such things disappeared. Everybody was busy, trying to survive.
The pandemic showed complete helplessness of medieval medicine and powerlessness of religious institutes in fight against plague. Pagan cults and superstitions appeared again. People believed in different "poisoners" and "distributors of plague poison". The populations were so afraid, nobody could understood why such punishment has comprehended them. Before this tragedy the church in Europe was powerful, but when people started to die, people who were alive blamed God for everything that happened. People understood that it was a great punishment for their sins. Most of them stopped going to church, because they believed that bishops should know everything. But neither bishops, nor priests could explain the reasons of such tragedy. And people were disappointed.
Later most of the bishops, priests, monks and others who were involved in the church began to leave their churches and their places. In such a way people wanted to avoid problems. The churches become empty, nobody listened the people’s prayers. God was punishing people and they decided to turn back to Him.
The economy was not an exception and was also destroyed. Before the epidemic, people worked on the land and regularly payed money to the landowner. But when a lot of citizens were died, those who were still alive, decided that it is more convenient to work just for themselves and not depend on somebody else. It was the end of feudalism. It was still not enough people to sow a lot of grain or other crops. People died also because there was nothing to eat.
Animals were also a rarity. Those families who had a cow or a horse, or even a cat or a dog, tried to protect their animals and took them to their homes. It was horrible and unhygienic. People did not think about the purity, they even almost did not take a bath. It killed them because the infection was quickly spread in the mud.
Nothing is eternal. During many years it seemed that the disease will never go away. But anyway the time has come when people realized that the plague begins to disappear. Those who survived started a new life. But it was very difficult. A lot of teachers, doctors, scientist, and skilled workers were died. Nobody wanted to trade with Europe. At that time Europe was almost destroyed and it took many years and a lot of efforts to turn Europe into a prosperous state.
What can we tell about that period? We are happy that can only read about that horrors and do not know how it is in reality. At that time people could cope with this terrible trouble, could survive and again revive the country. And I am sure that God was with them and helped them.
Nowadays Europe is rich and beautiful and also very popular among the tourists. Every year thousands of people came to see different sights in European countries.
