About The Author

Edgar Allan Poe is a talented American writer, poet, editor and literary critics. Most of his works were written in American romanticism style. Poe is a creator of a form of the modern detective story and genre of psychological prose. He is also known as the author of "scary" and mystical stories. A lot of his works are related to the science fiction. His favorite kind of writing works - were short stories. Allan wrote about seventy short stories for twenty two years. He decided to work only as a writer, that’s why he had often a lot of problems with money.

As for me, I like his short stories. Sometimes they are cruel, but always interesting and with unexpected endings. When you read Edgar’s stories you can move to another world, which is real only in the book. Despite the fact that his stories are short, you will always spend some time thinking about what you read. You will remember the unique plot for a long time.

The Cask Of Amontillado

The short story “The Cask of Amontillado” was published in 1846 for the first time. We don’t know where the events in this story take place, we don’t know the time, when everything happened. But the literary critics think that it can be the eighteenth century. The story has the first-person narration (story-teller is the killer himself). It takes you a few minutes to read the whole text. The short story is worth of reading and it is considered the best short story in the world.

The Plot

The plot of the story is rather simple. In one city there were two men – Montresor and Fortunato. Both of them were great wine-tasters. During a long period of time Montresor was angry with Fortunato. Fortunato often could offend or humiliate his friend. The story teller decided to revenge. His revenge was special. It was unexpected to Fortunato and Montresor remained unpunished forever.

Montresor was a representative of a noble sort, but nowadays he was not as rich as his ancestors. Fortunato was the successful nobleman. What did he do to offend his friend is unknown for us, but injured come up with a deadly revenge. Everything was carefully planned (the servants were send from the palace, everybody was on a carnival). Fortunato was drunk and caught a cold, but he was still interested in a good wine. And the story about the whole cask of amontillado could not leave him indifferent. Amontillado (a variety of wine) – was very rare and expensive drink, especially at that time. Fortunato could not believe that Montresor had bought a cask of this wine. He was sure that it is a fake and agreed to go to the cellar to check the wine. The poor nobleman did not guess anything. Montresor told about their family crest. It was the foot on a blue background stepping on a snake, which bites a foot for a heel. And their motto was: “Nobody will wound me with impunity”. It was a great hint, but Fortunato again understood nothing. He couldn't even think that has offended his friend. Soon two men came to the niche, where according to Montresor’s words was a cask. Fortunato came to the niche and his friend handcuffed him to the wall. Then he started to spread a stone wall. Fortunato was in panic, he cried, asked for help, he was in horror. But Montresor was unshakable, he was glad that at last he has revenged. He left his offender bricked up and went away. It was such an awful ending. It was like a capital punishment, but it is unknown for what crime.

About The Story

Allan Poe wrote this story in a peaceful manner. He was a talented writer and he described such an awful murder without blood and guts. But when we read the end of the story we imagine the worst. The general tone of the story is good-natured. The author told about bones, corpses, tombs with a touch of humor. That’s why the reader can’t believe that it will be an awful ending. We think that Montresor is not serious, he is also drunk and everything is a big bad joke. Later the reader understands that every word in the story was written with the irony.  Edgar Poe could write in a secret manner, he was a great psychologist.

The Title

The title of the story is rather symbolic. We can understand it in literal and figurative sense. For both men amontillado symbolize different things. For Fortunato it is a kind of pleasure, his wish. He is going to do everything just to receive what he wants. At last he found himself in a stone prison. His wishes and stupid behavior have led him to death. But for Montresor amontillado is just the way to realize his cruel plan. Like Fortunato he also did everything to reach the desirable. He wanted to revenge and he had revenged. Now he was free.

Having read this story I was shocked for the first minute. But the author is Poe and such endings are quite normal for his style. I advise you to read “The Cask Of Amontillado”. It won’t take you a lot of time.
