Man Who Changed The WorldEverybody who was born must do something good for others. Some people understand their mission at once others are looking for it for the years. But it is better late than never. Today we are going to talk about one great and famous scientist. His contribution to medicine is really huge. As a result of his researches – thousands of people were and will be saved. We will focus on the Frederick Banting – the man who invented the insulin (protein, which is able to save from the death).

I think everybody heard about such a disease as diabetes. It is a terrible disease and people who are suffering from it have no enough pancreatic hormone insulin. This hormone takes the glucose to the body’s cells. The glucose is necessary in our blood as it gives energy to the whole body. The Biography

The scientist was born in Canada in a big family (he was the fifth son). He was a clever boy and he liked studying. After graduating from school he started to study theology but later he changed this subject and became interested in medicine. It was wonderful because his great mission on the Earth was connected with this science. During the World War he was not sitting idly by, and even was awarded the Order. After the war he practiced his medicine in London. At that time Frederick learned orthopedics. For some time he studied the cancer (you will find the essay on cancer on our website). He also was a lecturer in Toronto University.

But soon Banting came to his mission – he was interested in diabetics. He learned a lot about this disease, read a lot of books, articles and scientific papers. Than he started to work with other scientists and together with the young assistant they began to carry out experiments.

His privet life was not as successful as his career. He was married twice and had a child from the first wife. Banting died in 1941 in an airplane crashing on the Newfoundland Island.

The Invention

80 years ago an unknown Canadian scientist Frederick Banting saved the life of young boy. The boy was suffering from the diabetic and he was the first person in the world who did not die immediately from this disease. Bunting’s friend from childhood died from diabetes and therefore Frederick worked long and hard with this problem.

For many year people could not cope with this disease and when somebody received such a diagnosis – it meant that the person will soon die. Without this hormone the body could not assimilate the glucose and the body was slowly fading. Frederick and his co-workers invented the insulin. This invention saved the lives of millions pf people. Although diabetes is incurable nowadays, thanks to insulin people learned to keep this disease under control. And now people with diabetics don’t die immediately. The science history is full of significant events, but the invention of insulin is a special case, as this is the rare event when a science experiment was done very quickly, and only in just a few months, has given a great result - saving people’s lives.

When Banting invented the necessary protein he could become very rich and receive the patent on this medicine. But he acted differently – all the rights he gave to the Toronto University and in 1922 the new medicine appeared on pharmacy shelves. In the same year Bunting defended his doctoral dissertation and received worldwide recognition. For the discovery of insulin Bunting was awarded the Nobel Prize. His assistant was a student that is why he was not among the candidates. Frederick was outraged with this fact so he decided to give a half of his premium to the assistant. This act shows us that the scientist despite his popularity still remained simple and generous person.
